Indian Academy of Management (IAM)
Shaping the Agenda, and the Way Forward

Venue: Monday 10th August from 11:30 to 01:00
at Hyatt Hotel Skyway 281, Chicago.

Since the first caucus in 2007 bringing together colleagues interested in research, training, and development in the Indian context, we have made solid progress towards establishment of an Indian Academy of Management (IAM), with the goal of creating opportunities and providing a platform for colleagues who are either working or have an interest of doing research in the Indian set-up. As is well known by now, India is considered as the second most important emerging market in the world, and is one of the few countries that continue to grow even in the current bleak economic outlook. Indeed, the World Bank forecasts that by 2020, India could become the world's fourth largest economy.

In the present economic environment, both academicians and practitioners are eager to find out about the nature of management systems relevant to the Indian context. Unlike some of the other emerging markets like China, there is a dearth of reliable and relevant management related research on India. In such conditions, researchers in particular are not sure about the kind of frameworks, approaches, methodologies and technologies, which can be suitable for conducting research in the Indian set-up. In order to conduct meaningful research, issues such as getting access, collecting reliable data, research ethics, sharing of best practices and validity of western instruments in India need to be seriously considered. A possible way forward to utilize our efforts to efficiently conduct valuable research is to perhaps discuss related critical issues, share experiences and best practices amongst the research community. Also, the opportunity to develop collaborations needs to be expedited. The AOM meetings being one of the most useful venues for both management researchers and practitioners, certainly provides the required platform for the shaping of the agenda for the Indian Academy of Management.

Colleagues attending this caucus will share their experiences, research findings, key ideas about how to successfully conduct research in India and also about the best management theories and practices valid for such a context. This will certainly contribute to building collaborations, leading to the creation of relevant knowledge and possible strategies to disseminate the same.

Already a large number of scholars from different parts of the world have shown great interest in this regard and given their consent to this initiative and believe that it is now very timely that this should be a regular feature of future AOM meetings.

In addition, we will discuss the inaugural IAM conference, and other related activities, such as co-sponsorship of a journal.Colleagues attending this caucus will share their experiences, research findings, key ideas about how to successfully conduct research in India and also about the best management theories and practices valid for such a context.
